Traditions

First, I need to really give a big thank you to all those who gave me blogger b-day wishes. Won of the greatest gifts I received was all those Happy Birthdays in my inbox Saturday morning. It really did make my day! Thanks so much for taking the time.

My restlessness has subsided a bit thanks to the help of my family. Hubby and kids-- all three of them-- have really helped me out this birthday weekend. Yep, sometimes I want to chuck it all and get away from this place-- but spending time with these guys -- doing stuff I really enjoy-- well it was great therapy!

I'm going to have to do a few posts here guys, so bear with me. So much went on this weekend my head is spinning-- and I didn't even drink (that much!)

Do you all remember the musical / movie Fiddler on the Roof? It is one of my dad's favorite movies. He really enjoys family traditions and, although we don't have too many, he feels the ones we do have should last forever. Since he isn't drinking, having the local police over on the holidays is one of the traditions we have forgone.

I have a few birthday traditions. I try to keep up with them and find I am unhappy when I don't. So here they are

1. Fresh strawberry whip cream birthday cake. The flowers need to be blood red and the cake has to have my full first name on it. No age. Now, because my birthday is in October, I am always am asked the same question when I order it "Are you sure you want the fresh strawberries? It will cost extra." My answer is always the same "I don't care about the cost, just so the strawberry are fresh-- oh and make sure the cake is white!"

2. Candles on the cake. I prefer to have all individual candles, but have been okay with the number candle for the first digit and single candles for the rest-- only because it is easier to light this way.

3. Burgoff Red Ale. For the past 12 years I have toasted my birthday with Burgoff Red- one year we couldn't find anything but amber, but that worked out okay. You'd be surprised how good Red Ale tastes with whipcream cake.

4. Costume. Some time over the week of my birthday, I must dress in a Halloween costume. Just have to .. That's all... Otherwise it's not a really birthday.

5. Not cleaning!!! Well, it is kind of like that all the time, but on my birthday I make sure I dont clean the house-- that's why the kitchen is such a mess in this picure.

I don't have any birthday traditions, but my last birthday was pretty cool anyway.

Also happy belated birthday. I have four sisters, 2 daughters and a few assorted nieces and nephews. Four of us sisters and the related kids all have a special and often cheap way of birthdays. The other sister is an alien !

Our dad who was killed when we were aged 17 down to 4 used to always make our cake, if he wasn't sent away working. He would slap on Smarties and other lollies on top of the cake. Soft drink, was bought from the Greek Milk bar next door. We only had that on occasions. The birthday person didn't have to do any work and had many of her wishes met for the day. Pressies were many but very small as each little thing was wrapped up like fort Knox and took ages to open.

I think of our mum and dad, young, happy, poor and terribly in love and I know we were rich as...and that poor little tradition with our big calloused-handed Dad very ponderously arranging the Smarties by colour has stayed with me down through my life and gone into my daughters. We were rural poor, so Dad could turn his hand to everything...from fencing, hunting, changing nappies and working tw and three jobs to keep out of debt...which we just managed.

Its the essence of what was... tradition. Thanks for reminding me of all of this... Dad died so long ago now, and this is a wonderful memory of him... My memories of him are in black, grey and white generally, because I was so young. But today thinking about this in my mind he was in colour...maybe it was the smarties???
