Monica and Mouse March

My birthday weekend was in-fucking-credible. I have at least 3 post regarding the weekend, maybe even more! But we need to start somewhere and because I have NOW reached an age that I don't have to give a shit of what other people think, I will start in the middle and my meeting of the famous Monica.

Monica and I met for brunch at an awesome place south of the down town area. The really interesting thing about growing up in Chicago some 30 odd years ago, is that most of the neighborhoods that were bad are now trendy. It really amazes me. I don't assume anything about any area in Chicago anymore. I feel if I made it through the gang infested streets as a teenager going to school-- I'll walk anywhere and explore any place in the city.

Oh, that reminds me, before I go on about the wonderful Monica.. I think the concierges at the hotels are paid directly by the cab companies. Every time I asked for directions this weekend, the response was "let me call you a cab". It didn't matter where I was going, everyone wanted me to get into a cab. I kept asking about public transportation or walking they looked at me as if I was a foolish child-- and I'm 40 years old (appropriate time to drop the age-- huh?)

So anyway I WALKED to The Bongo room and met Monica. She looks exactly like she does in her picture. I mention that because I am really careful to only show you guys the good pictures of me. Monica obviously looks good all the time.

So here is the awesome breakfast and the awesome Monica.

After breakfast, Monica decided she would head with me to the rally against the war in Iraq (I have to remember to put in that it was against the war-- I actually had some one ask me what side I was on!)

I was thrilled Monica wanted to hang with me. I did know a few people who came down from my our town (including a pastor from on of our local churches) I met up with them, introduced them to my buddy Monica and then ditched them -- sort of. It is not that I don't like these woman, I actually have a great deal of respect and admiration for them. It is refreshing to know that there really are other poeple in my little town that have simmilar points of view on importante issues. However, I wanted to be a Chicago girl this weekend. I'll catch up with the chuch ladies later!

Anyway- Monica and I walked and talked and marched and chanted.
Well, we chanted the easy stuff. Some of those protest march chants are obviously crated by music majors. Four part harmony in a chant, that is talent!

I was really impressed with the march. This is an issue that unites people. At least that is how it looked on Saturday. They say there was a large group of counter protesters. To be honest, I think I saw 4 (not groups, 4 people)

While we marched we shared stories and got to know eachother a little better. She really is just as fasinating as she seems from her blog.

Monica marched with me to the plaza and then she had to go. I'm sure you remember her floors are being installed, so she had some work to take care of.

Monica is truly one of the most beautiful people I have ever met. She is wise beyond her years, self confident, witty, and very well rounded. She blows my mind-- she did when I started reading her blog and she does even more now that I have met her in person. Monica will definitively be some one I will hang out with, (maybe at a might be giants show, or some other concert) that is, if she doesn't mind being seen with an old lady like me!

I hope I get to meet the whole fam on the 16th so that they can join in with our off beat, off key, wrong words protest chants. I don't know how people do it!

Fun! that's so nice you guys got to meet and hang out. Pics of the protest were great. Oh, and you and Monica, both hot. It's confirmed. My daughter was disappointed I didn't go to the protest in Seattle - had a meeting that afternoon. She helped organize the one in NYC and went there for it. They're having one for Jena here on the 7th,that I want to go to.

So what do you expect to happen when we leave Iraq? Iran takes over? Al-Qaeda? Either we stay or we go back in 3-10 years.

Happy-Bday!
Whenever there's a protest here, the media reports the same thing- "the large group of Bush supporters" etc...yet there are usually only three or four pro-war individuals at any given event.

What a great time! Thanks for sharing, CM! It's always thrilling to hear when two bloggers get to meet finally!

As usual, your photos of Chicago brought back memories. Especially since they were pics of a group speaking their mind on something. I love that! - and I loved the trip down memory lane. Do you mind if I share?

Let's see. The time was also in Chicago. Ours was more of an awareness campaign rather than a protest (altho I've done my share of those too!). I was a member of The Last Patrol, led by Michael J. Martin and Doc Holiday. The Last Patrol was dedicated to educating the public about the POW / MIA issues and our government's complicity in perpetuating it. We had just choreographed a 100 mile, 4-directional, 5-day walk - all culminating in the same town (I forget the name now - way outside Chicago - hey, wouldn't it be funny if it was your town CM?!), on the same day (and even very nearly the same hour)!! Doesn't sound impressive? Try to imagine: 4 legs, each with many many marchers. The North leg starting just over the Wisconsin border, the West leg starting (if I recall correctly) in Iowa, the South leg in or very near to the Indiana border and the East leg starting at water's edge of Lake Michigan on North Avenue! Each leg involving 5 CONSECUTIVE days worth of 20 miles of walking each day. Not to mention having to coordinate getting permits where needed, places to sleep for the marchers, volunteers to feed everyone -- all for 4 different legs! After helping to plan and coordinate all of this, I firmly enlisted myself as a walker on the East leg. Our route was the simplest: walk North Avenue West, all the way, all 100 miles! I walked every inch of that 100 miles!

We did this in the heat of summer. There are many things that stick out in my memory about that walk, but nothing more hauntingly (and reassuringly) than what happened on that final day. The heat was intense and there had not been a lick of wind the entire time. Not even at nighttime. The heat was bad enough, but not having it broken up a bit by wind or even a slight breeze was the WORST. Nearly unbearable. When all 4 legs finally came together in that little town - right when they were within mere feet of each other, with no warning at all - two amazing things happened simultaneously: 4 hawks suddenly appeared right over the very center of the congregation - and - a really strong 4-directional wind sprang up out of nowhere! Sounds unbelievable I know. If I was only reading this - and had not lived it - I would not believe me either. But it's true. Those hawks, and that wind, were ... well ... I just don't know. Don't know how to describe it. Except to say that the effect was not lost on any of us -- not even the townsfolk that had gathered to welcome us! I never knew it was possible for a silence of that intensity to envelope an entire town square jammed elbow to elbow with people!

I am formerly 'sonnets' or 'TS' my blog which I accidently/not so accidently deleted :( [I'm trying to restore it!] I love this whole bloggers thing... I've only been at this for six months and am totally hooked on virtually learning about like minded spirits around our world! Looks like it was all great fun!
